I had Robbie Kanner design this beautiful blog for me, and then I get too busy to actually use it.  So, while I sit around with a bit of a day off, I figured I’d kick it off.

Jess is in the basement running on the treadmill, listening to music.  The song that just played has an interesting story for me.  It must have been the summer after my sophomore year of college, which would put us at 1995 (musings about how old I’m getting in a blog entry to follow).  I turned on my clock radio as I was going to bed and heard the last 20 seconds or so of a song that absolutely made me stand up and say, “what the hell is this?”  Mind you, this is before Shazam or satellite radio or anything that could have given me the instant gratification of knowing right then and there what I was hearing.  I was at the mercy of an FM DJ to tell me what I had just blown my mind.

Which, of course, never happened.  After listening for an hour, I nodded off.

I didn’t hear the song again, but it still lingered in the back of my head. I never really forgot about it, but I didn’t really have much information to actively seek it out.

Fast forward to two years later, I walked into my best friend Jimmy’s garage, and couldn’t believe my ears.  He was playing that same song on a little boom box.  I had heard less than 30 seconds of the song two years ago, but instantly, I recognized it, and ran over to the boombox to find out who it was.

The song was “Where’s Summer B?” from the first Ben Folds Five album.

The song had a reckless abandon that I wasn’t really used to hearing then, not to mention crazy piano pop chords that were way beyond the vernacular of this guitarist.

I bought the album the next day.  Jess and I still listen to it all the time.

So here’s my question: Has this happened to you?  Have you ever been hit with love at first sight by a song?  What songs these days could have you still humming them in two years?

The great white buffalo.

Just a bit of text so I can format it for Wyman!
